Mother’s Day Out

Well, that is easier to say than, ‘Elder Care Provider Day Out.”

But that’s what we did yesterday.  I found an adult day care in Mesquite.  It is open 5 days a week, but I just wanted to try it and see how Gpa did.  I was as nervous as when the kids first went to daycare.

I kept my phone close as I ran errands and then did projects around the house. Of course, I didn’t get a call.  He did great.

Another neighbor saw me weed-eating my yard and lent me their mower. So nice!

Gpa had a good time but he’s been telling me he’s old.

At Garden Ridge, I bought 2 sets of full sheets on sale for the sofa. One is a lavender and the other is a turquoise. They were 7 each and I found out why when I got home. Very shear. hahahaha.

Then I found a throw that is white with black and peach spots like a leopard or something. It was only 4 and it is on Gpa’s chair.

My den makes me laugh happily.

I also stopped at Home Depot and got cord for the weed eater. I had to buy a 3 pack.  A lifetime supply.  But when I opened the weed eater, it had just come un threaded. Drats.

I also bought some pipe insulation for the outside pipes and weather-stripping.

Next was the grocery store.  I took my clipboard in that had my to-do list and a bunch of notes of things I want to do and write.  For a moment, I thought, I should just take the to-do list but I overrode that thought and just grabbed the whole thing.

Coming out of the store, the wind flipped a few of the pages up so I weighed it down by the store add.  UM that was not enough.

As I got to the car a gust of wind grabbed the pages and they went flying across the parking lot!  All I could do was grab my head.

I thought, I’ll just let it go and see if I could recreate what I lost.  I noticed a page just a couple of steps away so I picked it up.  Then another.  A gentleman arriving at the store started picking up pages as well.  He made it all the way to the strip of grass between the Home Depot and the store.  I followed behind crawling under cars that wheels had caught pages.   I think we got them all.

Don’t let the wind take your dreams away. They are too important.  Achieving them is one step at a time.

I feel like I got a lot done. Though I still need to do the back yard and alley.

Gpa was glad to see me as it was getting closer to dinner and he was worried about eating.  He said he’d go again.  I think we’ll make this a Thursday thing to do.

Garden Days

The last two days we have worked at the community garden.  Yesterday we harvested greens for the pantry and today we helped with tomato transplants.

On the way there, Gpa saw a sign that said, “watch out for ice.”  So he told me to “watch out for ice.”  I told him I would.

The transplants are being prepared for a fund-raising plant sale.  I am so glad to be a part of this.  I am learning so much.

I have to tell you that the seeds I have in my window look nothing like these green house beauties.  So sad.

I told Gpa we were going to the green house.  He took a look at it and told me it looked white.  It is covered in plastic.

I think his favorite part is the coffee.  But I don’t want to ask him right now and risk him asking for a cup right before bed time.

I think the fresh air and sunshine has done us both a world of good.

Hope you had a great day.

A Little Like Memento

If I will remember to pause and leave the room then come back, I get a better response from Gpa.

He was pulling up a new pair of pajama bottoms around 2 am.  There was a pile of clothes on the floor including his Depends.

I tried to tell him he needs to put on underpants.  He laid down and defensively put up a foot.

I left the room and when I cam back, I said, “Let’s put on some underwear.”

He said, “OK”.

He’s been sleeping in his jacket because he’s cold.  So  I didn’t notice until we got to the grocery store – he didn’t have a shirt on underneath!

NOTE to self:  do a full check before leaving the house.

He Didn’t Call It a Bucket List, He Called It Life

Gpa was around a lot longer than the bucket list.  I don’t know if he’s ever heard of it.

I do know there are a few things he has talked about that hasn’t happened.  and I’m not sure they will happen.  I know they won’t happen because of his efforts.  One won’t happen because of his health, one won’t happen because of his loss of memory and the last because I won’t let him near the power tools.

1. Travel to China and see the great wall.

2. Write a children’s book about a man and his son’s travels around the world.  He was going to put science in it.

3. make and donate wooden cars to hospitals to all 50 states.

I would have to say, it’s been a very good run.

Happy Valentine’s Day

Gpa was so thankful this morning for his oatmeal that he said, “This makes me love you.”

“I love you, too.”

“Get rid of all the other guys.”

HAHA well I don’t think that is going to be a problem, since  there are no other guys.

I had bread pudding with strawberries for breakfast.

Then we went to harvest at the community garden and were served heart shaped pancakes.  Yum!

I hope you have a love filled Valentines day.

Valentine's breakfast

Little Suzie Homemaker

The milk was going bad and made the coffee taste awful.  The due date is 3 days from now and it was over half full.  I didn’t want to throw it out.  Found out that sour milk or buttermilk recipes were created for this type of situation.  So I spent a lot of time in the kitchen.

I made orange/milk smoothies, buttermilk biscuits, and cornbread muffins.  All are in the freezer.  I had enough milk, I made a bread pudding.

I was given some apples so I made applesauce for Gpa.

I had also cooked some chicken and needed to de-bone it.  After that I made chicken and dumplings. Yum!  But Gpa still picked oatmeal for dinner.

Lillie said that it was very Julia Child of me.  Well, no, not a thing was French and I didn’t approach any of my cooking scientifically.  Though I do love that she thinks I’m like Julia.  I used to watch her when I was a kid. (Didn’t help,  I didn’t know a think about cooking every day when I got married.

The nice thing about having done all this cooking, is that I can blow and go and when we get hungry, just pull something out, heat and eat.

Hope you have a great Monday

Mission Accomplished

Wow!  We got a lot of things done today.

After eating breakfast, Gpa and I loaded up in the car.  We went to Home Depot and get a light switch, he really doesn’t like being in a dark bathroom.  Then we went to Fed-Ex to make tax form copies. Only .11 a page!  yay!  Then we went to the adult day care and filled out paperwork. One of the people who go, came over and talked to us.  He said Gpa will really like it.  I told him Gpa was only going to come 1 time a week. He was disappointed that Gpa wouldn’t be coming 5 days a week like he does.

“Well, “I said,” we’ll see.”

Didn’t hear back about the walker/wheel chair.  I’ll call on Monday.

At home I got the light switch changed and after lunch, even though I wanted a nap, I did Gpa’s taxes.

Then we loaded up in the car, got postage, made copies and then back to the post office before 5.  Whew.  One set of taxes done, one to go.

Then while fixing dinner, I put the instant coffee in the oatmeal!  I told Gpa he was getting a new flavor and he ate it right up.  Good thing he likes coffee.

And yet it doesn’t feel like I got anything done today!

I hope y’all have a great Friday!

Gathering Information

Last night a friend came over and we made vision boards.  We had a great visit and this morning when I woke up I saw the images I had picked out and they made me smile.

I hope my friend had the same results with hers.

Today, I made calls about a new wheel chair, an adult day care, and a friend whose had surgery to see if she’d like a visit tomorrow.  Tomorrow we’ll visit the friend, get paperwork from the day care, and  know more about the wheelchair.

I took Gpa for a drive but didn’t have anyplace in mind.  And then I decided to drive to the other church I am thinking of visiting.  They have a community garden.

As we were leaving, a lady drove up and we talked about the volunteer opportunities.  We can even get our own plot for a nominal fee.  That might be a good solution now that there are three dogs in the house.  I still plan to plant in the current spot but not expand to give more room for the dogs.

Gathering information is one thing, what you do with it is another.  I am looking forward to the changes we’ll be making.

Dreams vs. Reality

I dreamt last night that I was yelling, “NOW!”, “NOW!”, “NOW!” at God.

But when I woke up, I didn’t mean it.  Well, I did but not in regards to Gpa’s death.

Sometimes when I am telling Lillie it takes 2 months to get a corporate type job, I think I  should be looking.  Or should I be looking?

Really, I think I should start looking 2 months before he dies.  But I don’t know that day.

I’ve asked God so I can plan better.  You know budget the money so it doesn’t run out, keep each day precious, seek the job so I have it when I need it.

But He doesn’t answer.  When Gpa got up, he came out of his room without his pants, not knowing what had happened. They were wet and he took them off.

I am glad that he wants to take care of himself but sometimes it makes more work for me.

So laundry has to be done and I noticed we are about out oatmeal.  So grocery shopping will be added to today’s list.

I was hoping to wait until tomorrow when the ads come out.  But when is oatmeal and dry milk on sale?

He’s having a great nap now and I’ve sat and watched him breath several times.

I don’t know what I’ll do when he stops.  But it’s not like I haven’t done this before.  I’ll make phone calls, get the word out, make the arrangements.  Then gather loved one, remember, say goodbye, and continue to breathe.

That day will come but it’s not today.

I”m not worried that I’m the next in line.  Life has taught me that people don’t leave in the same order they arrived.

Not Doing It For a Reward

A woman told me yesterday that I was going to be rewarded for taking care of Gpa.  I know she meant well but I teared up.

I’m not taking care of Gpa because of something I am going to get.  I am taking care of Gpa because I love him and it’s what I want to do.

Right now the reward is having Gpa in my life.  He is such a blessing.  I am very aware that time with him is limited.  I will miss him very much when he is gone.

Have you told those you love what you mean to them?  Have you shown them?
